Bollywood Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Included In A Bollywood Dance Class?

You will have a professional dance instructor guide your group on how to perform this perfectly choreographed dance routine. Your booking will also involve the private room, so you can dance to your hearts content without other watching, making this a brilliant activity for hen parties.

Is Bollywood Dancing A Good Workout?

Absolutely, we will adjust how hard we go based on your group, the ages and abilities, your personal preferences and why you’re here (fitness workout, learn the moves or on a hen party / birthday). An intense class would normally lead to 800 calories burned, but we know most people who book this are after some great fun, they want to learn a routine together as friends and are more focused on the technique rather than calorie burning.

Where Did Bollywood Originate?

While the originator of the term ‘Bollywood’ is slightly mystic and unknown, we can tell you that back in 1899 a short Indian film was produced, which was silent and involved dance moves. This then evolved and in 1930 a film empire began in Bombay around Hindi language movies. Quite contrasting to Western movies, the focus was more on the stars than the plot when first created.

What Is The Most Famous Bollywood Dance Scene?

There are so many to choose from and you can request beforehand if you have a particular scene and dance set you would like to learn, especially if this is in build-up towards a wedding or a special occasion. Some of the most popular and well known scenes from Bollywood history include Dola Re Dola from Devdas in 2002, Mehbooba mehbooba from Sholay in 1975 and the more recent Munni Badnaam Hui from Dabangg in 2010.

What Is The Best Bollywood Movie?

Good thinking, do some research before attending one of these classes! We can highly recommend the hilarious 3 Idiots which stars the legend Aamir Khan. You might also want to see Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, which both contain Aamir Khan as well. For a recent release, you might also want to watch Dangal, which came out in 2016 and has a score of 8.4 on IMDB (at time of writing).

Why Is It Called Bollywood?

It’s a clever mix of Bombay (where it originated, the original name for Mumbai before it was changed) and Hollywood. Quite interestingly though, this doesn’t refer to all movies that come from India, a common misconception, it’s actually more commonly referred as Hindi cinema, with many other film industries and producers based in India. The term Tollywood was also coined in the 1930’s in relation to the Bengali film industry.

Can I Do A Bollywood Dance Class If I'm Not In Perfect Shape?

Absolutely, we can adjust the intensity of the class based on your preferences. We understand there will also regularly be people with more or less ability and energy, therefore you can get involved as much as you would like. We don’t expect any extreme moves, this is a beginner focused class, unless you request otherwise.

Where Do You Offer Bollywood Dance Classes?

We offer these dance classes all over the UK, including Brighton, London and Manchester. If you’re not sure if it’s available in your city, don’t hesitate to get in contact and enquire about your city and one of our event co-ordinators will respond as quickly as possible.

What Shoes Should I Wear For A Bollywood Dance Class?

Most attendee’s wear their usual gym shoes, which are perfect for moving around and offer flexibility. Of course, if you want to take on the classical moves and want to fully embrace it then you can do it bare foot or in part soled shoes. The importance is on comfort and freedom to move, so you shouldn’t wear anything restrictive such as flip flops or high heels.

What Should I Bring With Me?

As with any dance class, you will be burning calories and moving around a lot, so we’d recommend packing some water to keep energy levels high. You may want to bring a face towel, however this isn’t required. Of course, if you’d like to wear fancy dress then you’re more than welcome!
